Company's Survey Sheds Light on Women in Pest Control

Insight Pest Solutions, Morrisville, N.C., surveyed female technicians, small business owners, customer service managers and others to learn about challenges and opportunities in this traditionally male-dominated field.


MORRISVILLE, N.C. — From putting a bee suit on over a skirt to tackling a huge hornet’s nest to ignoring appearance-based comments while working at commercial agriculture farms, women in pest control and entomology quelch stereotypes day in and day out.
 
In these male-dominated fields, women are succeeding and making their mark. Insight Pest Solutions surveyed 30 women in pest control and entomology and compiled data on whether or not women have felt they have been held back because of their gender. They also spotlighted the 28 women who were interested in sharing their career experiences.
 
The women featured include professors at top universities nationwide, doctors in entomology, and agricultural pest management specialists.They are female technicians, small business owners and customer service managers.
They represent highly-respected organizations in the pest control industry, such as Connor’s Pest Control, Orkin, Rockwell Labs, Rollins, Arrow Exterminators, Action Pest Control, Catseye Pest Control, PCT Magazine, the National Pest Management Association, and leading universities such as Clemson, Washington State, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, and the University of Arizona.
 
The survey results illustrate how welcoming women feel the industry is, how gender has affected their career advancement opportunities, and more. Russ Ives, president of the National Pest Management Association, commented, "This survey demonstrates what those of us in this dynamic industry know - that our industry welcomes women, and talented women can certainly build successful careers in this profession."
