'98 Convention Product Highlights

Once again this year’s National Pest Control Association’s Convention, the greatest trade show on Earth for new pest management products and developing technologies, lacked major product introductions typical of past years, but several product improvements, new gadgets and developmental products were noted:

INSECTS. B&G Equipment gets the show’s top award for the most new products (25). Their most novel product was the Perimeter Patrol System, an exterior bait station that provides for liquid, pellet, gel and termite bait. This trap is designed to offer a smorgasbord of products for control of all types of perimeter pests, and to protect the baits from environmental conditions. The Multi-Dose (3000) is a dual-purpose bait gun designed for the application of gels and pastes, and when outfitted with Dry Dose Dispenser it can dispense dusts and granular baits packaged in A Snuff-It or a refillable bellows cartridge. Several other B&G Equipment items have been improved, offering greater versatility than older models. For more information call 800/544-8811.

Ever wonder what type of sticky trap to use in those dirty, wet kitchen areas? Woodstream has developed the Indoor/Outdoor Roach and Insect Station (M332), which is plastic holder for the Victor Pheromone Trap (M331). The station protects the trap from moisture and crushing and is ideally suited for use in commercial kitchens, laboratories, animal care facilities, outdoor locations, crawlspaces and other locations where moisture is a problem. The low-profile Station is easy to service, has an inspection label and is easily attached to walls and other surfaces. Call 800/800-1819.

The Clorox Company introduced new MaxForce FC small cockroach (German and brown-banded), large cockroach (American, oriental, smoky-brown) and ant (Argentine, pharaoh, thief, acrobat, cornfield, pavement, crazy and odorous house) bait stations, which will be available in mid-November. Larger bait stations for American, oriental, smoky-brown and other large cockroach species will be available in early 1998. The bait contains the newly registered active ingredient Fipronil, a nonvolatile material with a unique mode of action. The route of exposure is through ingestion and contact, and Fipronil is relatively non-toxic to non-target animals. Call 972/484-6326.

American Cyanamid will finally introduce the Subterfuge Termite Bait Station in 1998. This termite bait contains a “highly preferred food source,” and the active ingredient hydramethylnon, which provides delayed reaction mortality in termites and takes two weeks for control. The bait station is direct access and designed to line up the bait cartridge when it is returned to the in-ground section. Call 800/545-9525.

R. E. Chapin featured a multi-purpose injector system that uses the homeowner’s water supply to make termite, lawn and perimeter treatments. The equipment permits a 0.2 to 5.0% injection rate with an accuracy of 0.05%.

Pest West featured its Mantis wall-mounted flytraps, which offer the largest glue board in the industry. New for 1998 is the Mantis 1x2, which is an ultra-slim, wall-mounted and unobtrusive unit. It has two 15-watt UV bulbs and uses the same size sticky board as the original Mantis. The Nemesis has two 40-watt bulbs, is splash proof and is made of stainless steel. Call 800/843-6334 for more information.

Whitmire Micro-Gen featured their new line of ant bait products, Advance Granular Ant Bait (12 oz. or 6 lb. containers) and Advance Dual Choice Ant Bait Stations. We have had great success in eliminating odorous house ant infestations by baiting outdoor foraging sites with the granular bait. The foragers react very quickly to the bait and immediately begin carrying it back to the nest. Whitmire Micro-Gen has also reformulated all of their aerosol products. For more information call 800/77-8570.

BIRDS. InterNet has improved its bird netting products, which are now more durable thanks to 40% more weight, increased tensile strength and greater impact strength. Call 800/328-8456 for more information.

Hot-Foot has two new products that aid in the clean up of bird, bat and rodent carcasses, urine and feces. Digest-It is a waste digester, which, when sprayed on waste products, facilitates their rapid breakdown. Sterilize-It is a spray-on deodorizer and neutralizer.

Bird Barrier introduced a new stainless steel bird spike system, Bird-Flite, which is available in wide and narrow widths. The combination of a clear polycarbonate base, Clear Bond adhesive and thin stainless steel spikes make the installed system hard to see. The product is also affordable at $2.75 per foot and $2.95 per foot. For more information call 800/503-5444 (West) or 800/NO-BIRDS (East).

RODENTS. Kness Manufacturing introduced its Stop-All rodent and crawling insect trap. This trap features a see-through lid, high-impact plastic omni-directional entry points for insects, and a single entry port for rodents. There is a provision for pheromone use and a label. Also check out the accessories (clear view lid, glue trap, service labels, clear view end plate, protector, position strap and wall guard) for the Ketch-All. Call 800/247-5062 for more information.

Bell Laboratories featured Final, its newest single feeding anticoagulant rodent bait, which contains the active ingredient Brodifacoum. Bell claims this is the most palatable Brodifacoum bait on the market. This product is pink and is formulated as pellets and extruded blocks, which have a hole for a securing rod. They have also developed a one-piece plastic liner for the Protecta-LP tamper-resistant bait station. The liner covers both entryways and the feeding receptacle. It is easily cleaned or replaced. For more information call 608/241-0202.
