“It’s a growth market.” “It’s a great add-on business opportunity.” “It’s a way for me to set myself apart from my competitors.” These are all popular answers from pest management professionals who have found success in the challenging but rewarding bird control market. While the list of reasons for entering the bird control market varies from one PCO to another, they all can agree that having the latest, most innovative bird control products is essential for success. Here, PCT has listed some of the latest bird control products available. Manufacturers, if your product isn’t listed, send information to Brad Harbison, 4012 Bridge Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113. Avitrol Corporation
www.avitrol.com
The Avitrol Birds Away Laser consists of an 8-ounce, hand-held unit, which emits three steady beams of red laser light, or one steady beam accompanied by two pulsating beams. Avitrol Birds Away Laser has rechargeable batteries, which allow for years of use. When directed into birds as they attempt to roost or perch, Avitrol Birds Away Laser has been shown effective in moving a variety of birds. Several periods of use are usually required for effective results. Avitrol Birds Away Laser is most effective when used in reduced light conditions when the beams are more noticeable, but not total darkness. In total darkness the beams are more prominent; however, many species of birds are reluctant to take flight in total darkness. This tool annoys but does not injure the birds. Birds are neophobic, meaning they are frightened by things that are new to their environment. Thus, Avitrol Birds Away Laser works as a frightening instrument.

Bird-B-Gone introduces Bird Slope, an anti-perching, anti-roosting deterrent that is effective against all types of birds, including swallows, starlings, pigeons, seagulls and more. Bird Slope is UV protected, long lasting and easy to install. Its unique design makes it impossible for birds to land on 90-degree areas including eaves and ledges. Bird Slope also has an easy “snap-on” extender, which makes it easy to adapt to wider ledges and areas of coverage.
Bird Barrier

Bird Barrier recently introduced the new Electric Cordless Net Ring tool. The electric tool allows total freedom from cords or hoses, and saves the installer’s hands from hard, repetitive squeezing. Bird Barrier’s new tool comes with a charger and two batteries (in a heavy-duty plastic carrying case). Features include: Each battery squeezes between 1,000 and 1,300 rings; the magazine holds 160 rings; and the tool features a fast cycle time. Bird Barrier is also offering black net rings for the tool. Coated in black PVC they make invisible seams a reality, and greatly lower the visibility of nets in a wide variety of settings. The rings also are available in galvanized and stainless steel.
Bird-X
www.bird-x.com/pct
Bird-Proof bird repellent compound from Bird-X discourages birds from alighting and nesting for a year or more, even under the most extreme weather conditions. The chemical compound has a tacky, uncomfortable feeling that birds avoid—as people avoid walking on wet tar — it “feels” unpleasant; yet it’s harmless, odorless, nonpoisonous and environmentally friendly. Two formulations — gel and liquid — serve all applications and are easy to apply to any surface: Gel is applied in beads, using a standard 10-inch caulking gun, to any surface where birds roost or perch: window sills, air conditioners, roof perimeters, ledges, cornices, ornamental copings, rafters and beams. Liquid is applied with a pressure sprayer or paint brush to hard-to-reach areas, trees or shrubs. Bird Proof sets semi-clear in minutes, so it is nearly invisible. It can be applied to any surface — concrete, metal, wood, cable or electrical wire, and in any climate — extreme heat, cold or rain. A thorough application protects property for approximately one year, at which point removal and reapplication is necessary. Bird-Proof is a quick, easy, long-term barrier to birds, allowing the pest management professional to eliminate unsightly and unsanitary birds and their droppings, as well as the high and recurring costs in dollars and man-hours to clean and repair the mess.

Innolytics
www.hatchcontrol.com
EPA recently approved new egg hatch control technology for Innolytics’ new product, OvoControl. Innolytics has developed technology to control the population growth of resident Canada geese. The technology, developed in collaboration with the USDA/APHIS National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), is essentially oral contraception for birds. The company reports there is no comparable technology on the market in the United States today. The core technology for OvoControl centers on the ability to significantly decrease the hatchability of eggs by feeding treated bait to birds during the reproductive season. The effect is fully reversible and care has been taken to develop a feeding system, which will limit exposure to non-target species, according to Innolytics. USDA conducted research on this technology for several years and continues to evaluate further applications in other pest species.
