COCKROACH BAITING GUIDE
Here’s a look at some of the industry’s most innovative cockroach bait products from leading manufacturers.
Cleary Chemical (www.roachterminal.com)
The Cleary Roach Terminal is an innovative baiting system with a patented Birth Control Effect.™ The active ingredients in the Roach Terminal, oxypurinol and xanthine, have never before been used within the pest control industry. Oxypurinol is a pharmaceutical used to treat gout, and xanthine is an enzyme that occurs naturally in the human body. Together, these active ingredients create a barrier, preventing the cockroach from using uric acid and causing its bodily functions to break down. Cockroaches rely on uric acid as much as food and water to ensure their survival. After less than a week of exposure, the female is sterile, the nymphs cannot molt, and the males cannot recover from the toxic effects of the bait. The attractive bait matrix has been formulated to attract continuous feeding and the transparent bait station with almost 5 grams of bait provides easy monitoring of bait consumption and insect activity. The Roach Terminal offers long-term control with no population resurgence, according to the manufacturer. Due to the non-toxic active ingredients, it can be used confidently in any area, even those considered very sensitive.
DuPont Professional Products (www.proproducts.dupont.com)
DuPontTM Advion® cockroach gel bait achieves thorough control against a broad spectrum of cockroaches, including gel bait-averse German cockroaches. Indoxacarb — the active ingredient in Advion cockroach gel bait — was developed by DuPont researchers to target the insect’s nervous system. After ingesting Advion, the cockroach’s own internal enzymes change the molecular structure and attributes of indoxacarb into the more potent MetaActiveTM compound, resulting in paralysis, followed by death. Beyond the initial impact, Advion cockroach gel bait provides powerful exponential control of cockroach infestations through secondary kill for complete infestation elimination, according to the manufacturer. Indoxacarb’s novel mode of action is coupled with an excellent environmental profile, providing a unique combination of performance attributes for pest management professionals, DuPont says. In addition to providing control of gel bait-averse and non-bait-averse German cockroaches, Advion is effective against American, Australian, smoky-brown, brown, Asian and brown-banded cockroaches.
FMC Corporation (www.pestsolutions.fmc.com)
Transport™ Roach Bait from FMC kills high percentages of German cockroach populations — an estimated 83 to 90 percent of them — through direct ingestion of the acetamiprid active ingredient. Unique Transport Technology™ kills remaining cockroaches through several methods of active ingredient transfer, including saliva exchange, cannibalism, necrophagy and coprophagy. The coprophagy phenomenon is a unique property of acetamiprid, according to the manufacturer. This is an important method of active ingredient transfer that contributes to the optimum cockroach kill rate of Transport. The active ingredient in Transport Roach Bait makes it an excellent resistance management tool. In addition, the coprophagy transfer activity and the unique mode of action make Transport highly efficacious against both resistant and bait-averse cockroach populations, FMC says.
Rockwell Labs (www.rockwelllabs.com)
InTice Roach Bait from Rockwell Labs delivers fast results against a wide range of roaches, including bait-averse roaches. The unique paste formula, based on boric acid, has no resistance, doesn’t drip and never dries or hardens, according to the manufacturer. Packaged in industry standard bait syringes, the bait is easily applied using bait guns or the manual plungers included with the product.
Waterbury Companies (www.cbproproducts.com)
Waterbury Companies, through a special agreement with the manufacturers of Siege and Pre-Empt cockroach gel baits, has introduced the first cockroach gel bait dual syringe. By putting Siege and Pre-Empt side by side in a dual syringe, pest management professionals can attract roaches with two formulas. Pre-Empt Professional Cockroach Gel Bait contains 2.15% imidacloprid in an odorless, white formula that is ideal for sensitive areas such as food-handling establishments, schools and hospitals. The matrix stays soft and palatable and resists weathering. Siege Gel Insecticide contains 2.0% hydramethylnon and is approved for crack and crevice applications in commercial kitchens. It can eliminate populations in 24 to 72 hours and keep roaches away for up to six months, the company says. Siege/Pre-Empt Dual Syringes are packed in 35cc dual syringes, 12 per case.
Whitmire Micro-Gen (www.avertroachbait.com)
For more than 15 years, Prescription Treatment® brand Avert® Dry Flowable Cockroach Bait has killed cockroaches deep inside cracks, crevices and wall voids. Featuring the active ingredient abamectin (0.05%), Avert is registered for use in food handling areas in all 50 states. The product features a number of advantages, according to the manufacturer, including: kills gel-averse roaches — does not contain gel bait components that cause aversion; long-lasting — can last for more than a year, so there’s no need to re-apply the product every month; and dual mode of killing — kills by direct ingestion or "pick-n-preen" (cockroaches pick-up powder on their bodies and they ingest it during preening).
Zoëcon Professional Products (www.zoecon.com)
Zoëcon Professional Products offers Matrix® Roach & Ant Bait, a highly attractive slow-drying insecticidal gel bait that stays moist long and attracts bait-averse cockroaches. Matrix contains hydramethylnon insecticide, along with an effective bait matrix combining proteins and sugars. Approved for use indoors and outdoors, Matrix is packaged in an easy to use plastic syringe, making it ideal for spot use, to refill bait stations, or in cracks and crevices, according to the manufacturer. Matrix also may be used in conjunction with Gentrol® Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) for a one-two punch against roaches.
Ant & Roach Buffet
With the influx of cockroach baits on the market, PCOs have been using these products in different locations and under varying conditions. Recognizing the trend towards increased baiting, Alan Bernard, president of Innovative Pest Control, has introduced a bait station designed to meet the multiple baiting demands of pest management professionals. The Ant & Roach Buffet is a prefilled bait station. Simply snip the top of the cone and place the bait station(s) where ants or roaches have been seen. The Ant & Roach Buffet is designed to hold 4 ounces of bait. It also can be used to control large infestations of ants or roaches. The entryways are adjustable and can be sized for ants, small roaches or large roaches. Ideal for use in preventative pest control programs, the bait station keeps liquid baits from drying out for four weeks or longer. The unique three-compartment design allows the use of three different types of bait simultaneously. A molded-in anchor tube allows for secure placement with a landscape spike (which is supplied with each bait station). The station offers a number of advantages, including keeping children and pets from contacting the bait. The bait station locks with an inexpensive tie and is constructed of tough, UV-resistant polypropylene for easy cleaning.
