About this State of the Industry Report
In May and June of this year, PCT commissioned an independent research firm to mail a four-page questionnaire to 1,000 of its readers, who were selected at random. We received 373 responses to the survey, for a response rate of 37.8 percent (this takes into account surveys not delivered, incompletes, etc.). The data were analyzed over the summer and are used throughout this report and online at www.pctonline.com.
Ninety percent of the respondents were male, and respondents’ average age was 52 years old. Respondents represented states from all areas of the country, with the largest number located in Florida (12 percent), Texas (10 percent) and California (9 percent).
Most of the respondents (81 percent) classified themselves as owner or president, and most respondents (92 percent) came from independent privately held businesses. About 65 percent of the respondents’ companies were founded after 1980, and most had one office. The 2007 median total gross sales for the firms surveyed averaged $229,729.
The stories in this report were written by frequent contributors to PCT magazine: Christine Brazell, Lisa McKenna and Anne Nagro.
Many thanks to Bayer Environmental Science for the company’s advertising support of this special report. Without Bayer’s commitment, this report and its accompanying research would not be possible.
