By the Numbers

PCT partner Best Companies Group polled employees and employers at companies who registered for the magazine’s inaugural Best Places to Work awards. What follows is interesting data from those surveys and our non-data scientist takeaways.

Employee Benchmarks (These numbers are the result of the survey completed by employees.)

Leadership, Corporate Communication, Company Culture
Senior leaders live the core values of the organization: 
92% of employees at companies on the list said yes 
76% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

I have a good understanding of how this organization is doing financially: 
88% of employees at companies on the list said yes
70% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

I can trust what this organization tells me:

Armchair Analysis: It’s no surprise that companies that communicate well are seen by employees as best places to work. The staffing levels gap between companies on the list and not on the list is one of the largest in the survey. 

Role Satisfaction and Environment 
I like the type of work that I do:

90% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

I have a clear understanding of my job role:

Armchair Analysis: The good news is that these numbers seem to indicate that pest control companies are great at putting employees in the right roles and providing a comfortable working environment, whether they made out list or not.

Pay/Benefits
My pay is fair for the work I perform: 
81% of employees at companies on the list said yes 
61% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

Overall, I'm satisfied with this organization's benefits package: 
88% of employees at companies on the list said yes
74% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

I'm satisfied with the amount of vacation (or Paid Time Off):

73% of employees at companies not on the list said yes

I'm satisfied with the sick leave policy:

Armchair Analysis: Of course everyone wants to get paid more. The 61 percent of employees at non-list companies is the second-lowest number in the survey. The lowest: 57 percent of employees at non-list companies said they’re satisfied with the tuition reimbursement benefits.

Training and Education

Armchair Analysis: This one seems simple. Provide training and ongoing education and you have happier employees. 

Overall Satisfaction

Armchair Analysis: Both numbers seem really important for maintaining and growing a successful business. The 85 percent of employees at non-list companies recommending their organization’s products and services is a good sign.

Armchair Analysis: Just 23 percent of non-list companies have any formal programs and/or practices to actively recruit and/or retain employees of varying ethnic and cultural backgrounds, but more of them offer ongoing diversity training, seminars and workshops or celebrations of cultural holidays. Seventeen percent of companies on the list have established a task force around diversity and inclusion.

Armchair Analysis: More of the non-list companies offered 401(k)-type plans, but winning companies offered more options (profit sharing, pensions and defined benefit, which is a kind of pension plan). Also, 8 percent of non-winners offer no retirement plan.
