DuPont Introduces ‘Earth-Friendly’ Product Packaging

In response to the pest management industry’s growing “green” movement, DuPont Professional Products has introduced Terrene, environmentally-friendly product packaging designed to provide hassle-free container disposal for PMPs.

More than a year in development, the innovative packaging is ASTM-certified biodegradable and compostable, meaning pesticide containers manufactured by DuPont featuring the maroon-colored Terrene brand can be disposed of quickly and easily without triple rinsing. “Terrene containers degrade in nine months to five years, which is more than 500 times faster than plastic, leaving behind no toxic residues,” observes Brenda Franke, marketing manager, DuPont Professional Products, Wilmington, Del.

Terrene-branded products also utilize water-based ink and adhesives, thereby contributing to the environmentally friendly nature of the packaging. “The term ‘Terrene’ actually means earthly, so we thought it was a suitable name for this product given DuPont’s commitment to environmental sustainability.”

In addition to its green characteristics, Terrene also offers a number of service benefits pest management professionals will find attractive. “Besides being environmentally smart, it solves a lot of disposal problems,” Franke said. “Triple rinsing of pesticide containers can be labor intensive for PMPs. Our Terrene packaging eliminates the need to triple rinse containers. Following use, the containers can be thrown away in any trash receptacle.”

The pre-measured containers also result in significant labor savings and reduced technician exposure to pesticides, according to Franke. “Since the containers are pre-measured they reduce the chances of a technician over applying or under applying the product, which reduces waste and improves customer satisfaction,” she said. “Dose packaging also provides enhanced inventory control and minimizes the risks of accidental spills.”

Franke says DuPont embarked on its quest to create environmentally friendly packaging because it aligns with the company’s corporate commitment to create sustainable solutions essential to creating a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. “In talking with our customers it became apparent they really wanted something that would simplify their technician’s life, making it easier to measure and apply our products, but limiting disposal and waste,” she said. Terrene addresses all of those concerns.

“We’re really proud of the new packaging because it ties into DuPont’s sustainability mission, the goal of which is to increase the societal and environmental value of all of our products over time,” Franke says. “We definitely try to walk the walk when it comes to the environment and we think it’s a good message for pest management professionals to communicate to their customers.”

Where applicable, DuPont’s products sold in the pest control industry will feature Terrene-branded packaging.
