Editor’s note: August PCT includes a feature on how extreme weather is impacting pest control companies. In the following online extra, contributed by HomeShield Pest Control, learn how this winter’s heavy rainfall have provided the California-based firm with opportunities.

Summer has once again arrived, which means the busy season for pest control companies is back. And this year, it’s back with a vengeance. While the busyness extends across the country, it’s especially busy in California after rain levels not seen in years have plagued the state throughout the first half of 2023. The California Water Watch says rain levels are more than double what they typically are so far this year. News outlets across the country covered the excessive rainfall, which in many areas led to flooding. All that moisture creates an enticing breeding ground for many pests, especially mosquitoes, and pest control companies are feeling the effects.

Added onto all this is the fact that it’s the height of summer, meaning - temperatures are rising, meaning bugs are more active. It would already be a busy season for pest control companies in California even if the rain wasn’t so excessive this year.

It’s a great problem to have, because business is booming, but at the same time, it becomes difficult to manage all the clients pest control companies in the Golden State are adding right now. New requests are constantly coming in, leading to the great benefit of increased revenue but also leading to extra work for staff. Additionally, existing clients are asking for more treatments, which means technicians are busier now than potentially ever before.

This means pest control companies have to react accordingly. Ramping up recruitment and retention efforts is key in order to stay ahead of the curve. A lot of pest control companies around the country are dealing with a shortage in technicians. It’s difficult to find qualified technicians, and the ones who are qualified are getting multiple pest control companies reaching out to them asking them to come work for them since they need more staff to deal with the extra work this summer. The companies with the strongest recruitment efforts, highest pay levels and enticing perks and benefits are seeing the most success when it comes to getting new technicians added to the teams.

The companies that can’t compete are going to be left in the unfortunate position of having to turn business down. Pest control companies provide an important service to make sure members of the community enjoy their outdoor time in the summer, so not being able to meet the demand causes a larger problem across the cities where demand is high but supply is low.

This is where it becomes so important to have good customer relations. If a pest control company has shown consistent care over a long term period with existing customers, those customers will most likely be understanding as long as technicians are open, honest and transparent about what’s going on. A short explanation of how the rain has made the problem worse can help the customer realize there may be a bit of a wait to get their treatments done.

The rain in California and inconsistent weather patterns many states have seen this season haven’t made any pest control company’s job any easier, but it has led to a lot more opportunity that perhaps struggling companies needed. For the companies that already had a strong client base, their recruitment and retention efforts are more crucial now than potentially ever before. Any little advantages in the areas of recruitment, retention and customer relations that a pest control company can gain will make all the difference in the long run as they deal with this massive influx of customers due to the rain.
