MANTUA, N.J. – Hoffman’s Exterminating President Bill Hoffman values helping others and often encourages employees to participate in charitable work. Because of his giving philosophy, it is no surprise that all five branches of the company recently teamed up to donate around 5,000 pounds of food to radio station 93.3 WMMR’s Preston & Steve’s 24th Annual Camp Out for Hunger.
Supporting the spirit of community is very important to Hoffman, Chris Westcott, marketing manager, Hoffman’s, said. November was the first time the company participated in Camp Out for Hunger, but it’s been far from the first time they have given back. Hoffman’s Exterminating has sponsored events in Pennsylvania like the Eagles Autism Challenge and the Gritty 5K. The company also has participated in charitable efforts like coat drives and Toys for Tots. When tornadoes ravaged the South Jersey neighborhood where Hoffman’s Exterminating is headquartered, employees used company equipment to help clean up debris.
By the end of Camp Out for Hunger, Westcott said, it felt as if everyone in the company had done something to support it whether it was donating food, notifying clients of collection efforts, or putting signs in yards.
Camp Out for Hunger is an annual event in which WMMR co-hosts Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison camp out in a parking lot for a week straight.?They sleep there and broadcast the Preston & Steve radio show from that location for a whole week. People also are invited to drop by and donate food. The donations benefit Philabundance, a non-profit food bank that serves the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania.
On a crisp Thursday morning around 5:30 a.m., Westcott said, around 15 Hoffman’s employees gathered in the parking lot with Elliot and Morrison. Five trucks– one from each of Hoffman’s five branches – towed along a trailer full of food. The mascot of Hoffman’s Exterminating, Bugsbee, also came along.
In total, according to WMMR’s website, the 2021 Camp Out for Hunger raised more than 2.3 million pounds of food for Philabundance. More than $1.8 million in monetary donations were made, too.
Westcott said officials at Hoffman’s Exterminating are already considering how they can give to Camp Out for Hunger in bigger and better ways next year.
“It makes me proud to be able to say I work at a place (where) that's important,” he said.
