South Korean scientists told the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago that mealworms can help feed a growing global population while lowering the greenhouse gas stress on climate.
The scientists say mealworm larvae could be mixed with fast food to add a cheap, meat like flavor. The hope is that by adding larvae, people will consume fewer meats from large animals, a climate change contributor. At the meeting, In Hee Cho, the project’s principal investigator, and colleagues cooked up mealworms with sugar, which they say created a tasty, protein-rich product.
As reported in earthweek.com, steamed mealworms were said to have even stronger, sweet corn like aromas, while roasted and deep-fried versions had shrimplike and fried oil-like qualities. — Source: Earthweek
U.S. Open Tennis Match Interrupted by Insect
The big storyline from this year’s U.S. Open tennis tournament was that it would be the final professional appearance by star Serena Williams, but there were other highlights as well, including one with a pest angle.
On Sept. 5, American Danielle Collins played a contentious match against Belarusan Aryna Sabalenka that was interrupted by a bug.
As reported by Yahoo News, as Collins stepped to the baseline ahead of her first service game of the second set “she noticed a bug crawling near her feet. She tried to usher it out of harm’s way with the tip of her racket, but the little critter stubbornly stuck around.”
A ball person ran out to assist Collins, trapping the insect instead of squishing it. According to commentators calling the match on ESPN, Collins is a noted animal lover with a reputation for ensuring bugs are “properly moved” while she plays, Yahoo News reported.
Ontario Premier Swallows Bee During Live Press Conference
A bee flew straight into the mouth of Ontario Premier Doug Ford as he was speaking at a news conference on privatizing health care in Dundalk, Ontario, Canada, in early August.
Leading up to the incident, a lone bee can be seen buzzing around Ford’s head before it disappears into his mouth mid-sentence, The Toronto Star reported.
“Holy Christ, I just swallowed a bee!” a stunned Ford, 57, can be heard saying.
As reported by The Star, Ford then coughed and appeared to reach into his mouth with his fingers. “I’m good, he’s down here buzzing around right now. He has a lot of real estate,” he said.
