Mosquito services offer many pest management professionals incremental revenue opportunities, and trapping and monitoring are essential components of any control program. However, many mosquito traps are not the most eye-pleasing, a problem that can be especially troublesome in a residential setting.
One of these traps is Catchmaster’s Ovi-Catch Mosquito Trap. Based on technology that was developed and tested in performance of research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ovi-Catch uses mosquitoes’ breeding habits against them. The trap uses the combination of organic ingredients and water to lure egg-bearing female mosquitoes by mimicking their preferred breeding sites, particularly container-breeding mosquitoes which are some of the most bothersome species for humans. Once inside the trap, the female mosquito is prevented from accessing the water by a screen and becomes trapped on a glue board inside the unit. Eliminating just one female mosquito can prevent up to 1,000 future mosquitoes. However, like other mosquito traps, the Ovi-Catch trap has a functional appearance.
The Ovi-Planter Mosquito Trap addresses this issue. Its attractive design helps it fit discreetly into almost any residential or commercial environment. In appearance it mimics a planter with foliage, making it an ideal tool for any spot where discreet mosquito management is needed. Like Ovi-Catch, Ovi-Planter utilizes technology that eliminates up to 1,000 future mosquitoes per female caught.
The development of Ovi-Planter followed a track like many of Catchmaster’s products. The Catchmaster research and development team utilized their extensive network of pest management professional partners to solicit feedback on the Ovi-Catch Trap. Once it became apparent that the appearance of the trap limited certain application opportunities, the team set about to develop a new option.
Ovi-Planter was developed over several years with many prototypes being tested in the field prior to the product being released. The key for the research and development team was striking the right balance between efficacy and presentation. Ultimately, a prototype was found that is as pleasing to the eye as it is lethal to mosquitoes.
“One of our core values at Catchmaster is Customer Centric,” said Stan Cope, Ph.D., Vice President, Technical Products and Services. “In this case, we listened to our customers who loved the Ovi-Catch but wanted something a bit more pleasing to the eye. Voila! The Ovi-Planter!”
In addition to the trap design, the research and development team at Catchmaster also listened to customer feedback on the glue boards deployed in the unit. In the end, this resulted in a board with release paper, making it easier to deploy in the field. Like Ovi-Catch, the Ovi-Planter product fits nicely into a monthly service schedule, lending itself well to pest management professionals’ offerings. For more info, visit www.catchmasterpro.com.
