GAS PRICES SKYROCKET

Those in certain service industries, like ours, face big problems when the price of gasoline hovers around $2 a gallon. According to the lundberg survey of 8,000 service stations, u.s. Gas prices reached an all-time high during the first week of may 2001, not adjusted for inflation. Cnn reported that the average price covering all grades of gasoline increased 8.58 cents as of may 4. Below are average gasoline prices from across the united states as of may 7, 2001:

AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION PROTECTS ANIMALS . . . and BUGS?Most people know that the American Humane Association (AHA) helps to protect animals during the filming of a movie. The group has been working with producers to facilitate safe, effective and efficient performances by animal actors since 1940. But did you know that AHA has rules regarding insects? Some of the group’s basic principles include that no animal will be killed or injured for the sake of a film production; if an animal must be treated inhumanely to perform, then that animal should not be used; and that "animal" means all creatures including birds, fish, reptiles and insects.

The following are AHA rules that apply to insects and arachnids. It’s a good thing pest management professionals don’t have to follow them:

  • Nothing can be done to an insect that will cause permanent harm, or permanently alter its physical characteristics or behavior.
  • When using insects, an animal handler knowledgeable of that particular insect or insects should be on set.
  • Care should be taken to assure the collection of all the insects used. None should be allowed to remain on the set or location. Particular care shall be taken when using a species not indigenous to the area.
  • When insects are brought on set for filming, to the extent possible, precautions should be taken to minimize the number of bugs flying into the lights.

EMPLOYMENT UPDATE: APRIL

Employment declined in April, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.5 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported in May. In April, construction employment declined after seasonal adjustment and average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents throughout the month.

The number of unemployed rose by more than 300,000 in April to 6.4 million and has increased by about 870,000 since October. The unemployment rate increased from 4.3 to 4.5 percent over the month and has risen by 0.6 percentage point since October. The unemployment rate for college graduates age 25 and older rose for the second consecutive month in April, but at 2.3 percent was still well below the rates for groups with less education.
