Green Product ProfileS
Editor’s note: In the December issue, PCT profiled several "green" products available to pest management professionals. As manufacturers submit additional green products to be highlighted, PCT will profile them here.
MGK
PyGanic products from MGK are designed as botanical insecticides offering broad spectrum control. Whether used to treat an organically compliant food facility or a sensitive account, MGK PyGanic Pro concentrate and PyGanic Dust offer a range of label treatment options, the manufacturer says. According to MGK, PyGanic delivers fast kill on a wide range of pests, from ants to cockroaches to stored product pests, and provides the benefits of pyrethrum, a botanical insecticide derived from the chrysanthemum flower. Pyrethrum is fast-acting and naturally degrades in sunlight, so there is no residual. That is a key reason PyGanic Pro is OMRI-certified for use in organic food-handling and -processing facilities. MGK says PyGanic Dust provides the same fast, effective control of both bed bugs and stinging insects in situations where the presence of a long-lasting residual insecticide is not desired.

Leaf Defier/FXI Building Products
Recently awarded the "Green Buildings Product Seal" from Green-Buildings.com, the Leaf Defier family of gutter protection products from FXI Building Products Corporation is designed to improve stormwater management, enhance building durability and prevent pest infestations by allowing water and fine particulates to flow freely through gutter systems while keeping leaves and other debris out.
Featuring high-performance urethane polymers, Leaf Defier is inserted into gutters to prevent leaves, twigs, pine needles and other obstructions from entering and clogging gutter systems, the company says. As a result, water flows through the foam filter insert, into the gutter valley and out the downspout to virtually eliminate overflows, according to FXI. The product also may change conducive conditions, the company says, and can help prevent pests such as mosquitoes and ants from entering gutter cavities.

AP&G
A new video from AP&G is designed to help professionals understand the principles of bed bug intervention strategies and learn the best ways to implement an effective monitoring program. The free, three-minute program discusses the value of early bed bug detection and the benefits of the Catchmaster BDS, a bed bug detection system designed to monitor for bed bugs on a large scale. The video is accessible at http://catch
masterpro.com/bds.php or by visiting the Catchmaster website.
According to AP&G, the BDS can be used to monitor for bed bugs or serve as a protective step to ward off recurring infestations once an original infestation is brought under control. The patented monitoring device is designed to detect bed bugs before they proliferate. The company says its BDS is designed to mimic the conditions of ideal harborage sites, featuring tight, dark spaces and textured surfaces. The device uses a patented adhesive pattern on an untreated coarse substrate. The combination offers bed bugs an ideal place to hide, trapping them at the same time, AP&G says. When strategically placed throughout the target areas, BDS monitors act as both interceptor traps, by creating adhesive barriers when used around bedposts; and as passive monitors, providing early detection in sheltered locations.

Thermal Clean/Insect Inferno
Thermal Clean’s Insect Inferno is a heat-controlled, mobile system designed to eliminate insects from items placed inside. The system works by quickly raising the core temperature of its contents — such as mattresses, couches and furniture — to kill insects and their eggs, the company says. Treatments are monitored and operated from a control room at the front of the trailer. The patent-pending Insect Inferno is currently being used in eight states and eliminates bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches and dust mites, the company says. The Insect Inferno mobile trailer is equipped with an electronic monitoring system, actuators that raise and lower the unit for easy loading and unloading, and a contained heat source to maintain a constant temperature.
