A recent event held in New Orleans helped one of the industry’s major chemical manufacturers identify future pest management trends.
More than 20 pest management professionals, researchers and industry consultants recently joined forces at a conference sponsored by Syngenta with the goal of identifying key market trends and their likely impact on new technology in the coming decade.
The three-day event — held in mid-May at the historic Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans, La. — featured presentations by well-known industry consultant Dr. George Rambo and a number of leading scientists from Syngenta, including Global Public Health Research Manager Dr. Phil Wege and National Technical Manager Dr. Bill McClellan.
"The Syngenta Technology Summit provided us with a unique opportunity to gain valuable market insights from both the research community and people on the front lines of the pest control industry," said Keelan Pulliam, head of Syngenta’s professional products business unit, which was formed by the merger of Zeneca Professional Products and Novartis late last year. "We want pest management professionals to know we’re serious about this market and the Technology Summit is one of the first steps in that process."
Attendees participated in breakout sessions designed to identify key market drivers in the pest control industry during the next 10 years, as well as the likely products and services needed to support these rapidly changing market developments. Program participants were divided into four groups:
- The Residential Pest Control Market led by Dr. Susan Jones of The Ohio State University and Syngenta’s Dr. Bob Cartwright.
- The Commercial Market led by Dr. George Rambo of GR Consulting Services and Dale Kaukeinen of Syngenta.
- The Government Market (military, municipalities and state and local government entities) led by Dr. Richard Kramer of American Pest Management and Dr. Bill McClellan of Syngenta.
- Novel/Innovative Product Technology led by Dr. Brian Forschler of the University of Georgia and Dr. Phil Wege of Syngenta.
Discussions at the Technology Summit will be excerpted in a special "Crystal Ball Report" to be published in PCT magazine in October and distributed at the NPMA Convention in New Orleans. "In this way, the entire pest control industry will benefit from the collective thinking of some of the finest minds in the pest control industry," said Dan Moreland, publisher of PCT. "It’s an exciting product we’re proud to produce on behalf of Syngenta and all those who participated in this important conference."
In addition to the roundtable discussions, attendees were given an update on "The State of the Professional Products Industry" by Pulliam and presented with an overview of "Packaging Design for Tomorrow’s Business Environment" by Tim Cotter, a packaging specialist with Syngenta.
Syngenta is a leading manufacturer of chemicals, employing more than 20,000 people and investing $760 million annually in R&D in the U.S. The company’s professional product line includes Demand CS, Demand TC, Demon EC, Demon WP, Archer, Talon-G and WeatherBlok XT.
