What's New?

As fly control services become an increasingly important profit center for PCOs, manufacturers are flooding the market with new products. Here are some of the most innovative products currently on the market.

Because of their ability to transmit disease, many flies and other flying insects are more than just swarming annoyances. News reports of deadly E. coli outbreaks and more mundane foodborne illnesses like dysentery have placed the media spotlight on disease-spreading pests like filth flies and other flying insects. As a result, requests for fly control services have soared.

“My clients have brought me in to learn how to talk to customers about the potential problems of flies,” said George Rambo, president of GR Consulting Services, Herndon, Va. When interacting with customers, Rambo urges his clients to stress the importance of sanitation, particularly as it relates to fly breeding sites. “Mechanical devices and light traps reduce fly populations and can help find breeding sites, but in order to control flies you have to eliminate the breeding sites because that’s where the highest concentrations of flies are,” he said.

That’s why Rambo recommends the use of drain cleaning chemicals, coupled with a thorough clean-up, to control most flying insect problems. Oftentimes, he says, pest management professionals don’t spend enough time cleaning the drains and sumps and, as a result, insecticide treatments aren’t as effective as they could be if the job was done properly. “My recommendation is to clean the drain thoroughly and then use products like EnzaMagic, DF5000 or Fly Gel as preventive treatments,” Rambo said. “They will keep organic debris from building up.”

Still, Rambo said both the pest control industry and commercial services (i.e., restaurants) have made strides in controlling flies. “I’ve been seeing more and more fly light traps in grocery stores, and restaurants are putting up new wall sconces which are more attractive than the older ones,” Rambo said. As a result, demand for flying insect control services in all types of accounts is on the rise, a good sign for the pest control industry.

The following is a listing of products available to PCOs offering fly control services. Manufacturers, if your product is not listed please send a photo and a press release about the product to PCT magazine, 4012 Bridge Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113 or fax the information to 216/961-0364 and it will appear in an upcoming issue of PCT.

AgriSense manufactures Generic Fly Boards for a wide range of electronic flying insect control systems. The pheromone-based sticky boards have ultraviolet light inhibitors formulated into the glue. These inhibitors prolong the glue’s effectiveness and increase board life, reducing overall costs. The company also offers Magnet Liquid Bait, an attractant that when used with the company’s Dome Trap is an effective, less expensive alternative to an electrical fly machine, the manufacturer says. Magnet Liquid Bait is available in two formulations, one for flies and fruit flies and the other for yellow jackets and wasps. Both formulations come in 250-ml bottles and are pesticide free.

Available from Air-Scent International are several flying insect control products. The Meter Mist’r metered aerosol dispenser is a sleek, attractive dispenser that emits shots from most metered aerosols. Also, metered insecticides from Air-Scent control flying insects for 30 to 60 days in areas up to 6,000 cubic feet, according to the manufacturer. The insecticides are natural pyrethrin-metered aerosols that fit most metered dispenseners.

In addition to the company’s other flying insect products, Air-Scent also offers the Insect Fogger, featuring micro-droplets that keep the 0.5% pyrethrin suspended for excellent flushing action and quick control.

The Mosquito Magnet from American Biophysics is a new portable, stand-alone mosquito and biting fly trap. The patent-pending technology of the Mosquito Magnet creates a plume consisting of the proper mix of carbon dioxide, water vapor and humidity. This plume attracts only mosquitoes and other biting insects and is not harmful to the environment. Once the insects reach the source of the plume, the patent-pending dual fan assembly that disperses the plume simultaneously vacuums and collects the insects into a net where they dehydrate and die. Mosquito Magnet runs quietly using a built-in thermometer electric power generator, thus eliminating the need for a battery or electrical line connection.
