RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – During National Mosquito Control Awareness Week — a week which coincides with the official start of mosquito season – Bayer announced a new way for professional pest managers to control mosquitoes.
DeltaGard® Insecticide, a wide-area space spray Bayer registered last year for use by mosquito abatement specialists, is now available for use by professional pest managers (PMPs). Bayer says DeltaGard is one of the newest technologies on the market and earned a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reduced-risk classification for wide-area mosquito control. DeltaGard is currently registered in all states (including Puerto Rico) with the exception of California.
DeltaGard is an ultra-low volume (ULV) solution that can be used in environments where people live, work and play.
“More and more, pest professionals are finding themselves at the front lines of addressing public health concerns, like vector-borne diseases carried by mosquitoes,” said Ray Daniels, head of marketing for professional pest management and vector control, "And we are proud to offer proven mosquito solutions like DeltaGard, as well as Suspend PolyZone, that PMPs can trust when delivering this important service to their customers.”
According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 billion people are infected from vector-borne diseases and more than 1 million people die from these diseases each year. While cases of malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya are typically contracted while traveling abroad, Bayer says concerns about Zika, Eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus contracted domestically have made mosquito control top of mind for United States residents this year.
“Mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals on earth,” said Dr. Kurt Vandock, senior scientist and product development manager for the Environmental Science Unit of Bayer. “But, because vector control specialists and pest professionals have done such a great job in the U.S., they are widely perceived to be just a nuisance that you wave your hand at. Now is the time to educate the public on the importance of mosquito control and to ensure pest management professionals have the tools they need to effectively manage these pests.”
The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA), which initiated National Mosquito Awareness Week, suggests following the “three Ds” to help protect from mosquitoes:
1. Drain: Empty out water containers at least once per week
2. Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
3. Defend: Properly apply an approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon-eucalyptus
To bolster these preventative measures, Bayer says barrier sprays and ULV fogging are important ways to help keep mosquito pressure low.
