BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Rob Greer, COO of Rove Pest Control, was presented with a Quilly Award at the Success Summit in Beverly Hills, Calif., in September.

Greer was a co-author of the best-selling book “Empathy and Understanding in Business,” along with renowned FBI hostage negotiator and author Chris Voss.

Every year, the National Academy of Best Selling Authors present Quilly Awards in recognition and celebration of authors who had made some of the lower visibility – yet just as important – best-seller lists.

“This award is something that I can use as a reflection point to remember the hard work that went into writing and promoting the book as well as the impact it has had on certain individuals,” Greer said. “It is a reminder to me also to embody the principles that I wrote about.”

As Greer recounted in “Empathy and Understanding in Business,” someone showing him empathy is what helped him through a potentially life-threating situation. "That touched me and helped me dive into [empathy], and I was able to change the way I do business. I saw a lot of good things come from it, and I really just want to spread that to the rest of the world."

Since writing the book, others have reached out to Greer to ask questions and share their perspectives on empathy. Although some have been critical of the concept (citing burnout among professionals who apply empathy) many have thanked him and embraced the concept. “I appreciate all of the conversations and see them as opportunities to explore how we define particular words and how we apply principles in particular situations,” he said. “The interactions are reminders that every situation is unique and requires context in order to apply any principle, no matter how simple it is.”

How has being a published author changed Greer? “It delivered me a mixed bag of exhaustion and excitement,” he said. “It also made me realize that any status we work to achieve can disappear as fast as it arrives. It has made me much more aware of how important the impact we have on individuals and how we relate to them is.”

Greer added that he is continuing to pursue writing. He is working a couple of books as well as a follow up documentary based on a book that will launch on Amazon. “Once we complete that, I can focus in on the other writing projects I have begun and feel out which one has the potential for the most impact."
