WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - John Furman, owner of BOOT A PEST, West Hempstead, N.Y., is the winner of the November PCT Book Giveaway. He will receive a copy of “Word of Mouth Marketing” which was referenced in PCT’s September feature story of the same name.
Furman has been in the pest control industry for about three years. Before founding BOOT A PEST, he was a heavy equipment mechanic. He had worked in pest control when he was a kid, and he knew the challenges that came with the career. So, Furman decided to slowly reintroduce himself to the profession and created BOOT A PEST about four-and-a-half months ago.
“I like the challenge,” Furman said. “I am a people person and I like being able to interact with people and solving problems.”
Because he started late in the season, Furman’s business has been mainly limited to bed bug work. Most of his customers are residential, but word of his company has been spreading.
“I’m quickly becoming the bed bug king of New York,” he said. “All of my revenue has been coming from doing successful bed bug treatments.”
Furman attributes his success to none other than “word of mouth marketing”. He has yet to put an advertisement in the paper or Yellow Pages.
“It’s the best form of advertising,” Furman said. “If you provide good service and good customer service people will talk about you.”
