FAIRFAX, Va. — As temperatures rise, so does tick activity, increasing the risk of tick-borne illnesses. However, less than half of Americans (46 percent) are aware that ticks can spread different diseases to humans through their bites, according to research conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA).
Tick Awareness Week, May 4-10, recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events, is a concerted effort to educate the public about the serious threats ticks pose to humans and pets, said the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA). From Lyme disease to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, tick-borne illnesses are on the rise nationwide.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also reported an alarming development: Alpha-gal syndrome, usually triggered by bites from the lone star tick, may now be connected to black-legged ticks as well.
"As tick-borne disease cases increase, and ticks expand into new regions, the role of pest control professionals has never been more crucial," said PPMA Executive Director Jim Fredericks. "As an industry, it’s our duty to lead the charge in educating the public on prevention, proper removal techniques, and the essential part we play in reducing the risks associated with tick encounters. Together, we can carry out our mission to safeguard the health and well-being of our communities."
To amplify this important message, PPMA encourages pest control companies to take part in Tick Awareness Week by sharing educational content on social media using #TickAwarenessWeek. Industry professionals can also access exclusive resources available to Mainframe subscribers on PPMAMainframe.org, including a customizable press release, social media content, logos, and branded materials such as high-resolution photos, infographics and videos.
