5 Questions with Dr. Nina Jenkins

Aprehend is a very different solution — there’s nothing else like it for bed bugs in structural pest control. So, ConidioTec often gets some interesting questions and we thought they might be of use when explaining Aprehend to both residential and commercial clients.

Dr. Nina Jenkins, Chief Technology Officer, ConidioTec
1. Is Aprehend safe for humans and pets?

The active ingredient, Beauveria bassiana, is a spore that is commonly found in the environment. People are constantly exposed to low levels of fungal spores. In fact, Beauveria has been used to control pests in vegetables for over 20 years and has an outstanding safety record. Aprehend has met all the EPA registration criteria for indoor use against bed bugs.

2. Why do PMPs have to use a special spray kit?

The Aprehend spray kit was customized to deliver the labeled rate and concentration of product. Every other spray kit (low-volume or otherwise) that we tested either sprayed at too high of a rate or became blocked within minutes of use. The ultra-low volume spray is crucial for proper application. Application at higher volumes would be messy, wasteful, and expensive!

3. Is it hard to train technicians?

Aprehend barrier placement requires a thoughtful approach, but it’s not difficult, and actually requires less product applied in fewer locations than most chemical applications. A technician can learn how to apply Aprehend in less than 30 minutes by watching our training videos. And we offer free, personalized training for your whole team over Zoom.

4. If a firm’s current bed bug protocol is working fine, why switch?

Successful bed bug eradication is all about the skills of the PMP. However, if your protocol requires more than two visits, switching to Aprehend could save you a lot of time and money. Aprehend users report that most infestations are eliminated with a single visit plus a 30-day inspection to confirm eradication.

5. What’s the best “quick knockdown” before treatment?

Vacuuming visible bed bugs during service gives the fastest and most reliable population knockdown. Both Aprehend and traditional chemicals will kill on direct contact, but no chemical can compete with the efficacy/speed of a vacuum.
