Rarely has there been a topic more talked about in the pest management industry than public health. As pest management professionals look to promote themselves as "protectors of public health," one area is top of mind — mosquito control. While some public health pests are regional (ticks and fire ants in particular), mosquitoes are everywhere — including stories appearing in newspapers and on TV.
Following is a listing of several products available to pest management professionals in their battle against mosquitoes. A list of general use insecticides that feature mosquitoes on the label will be featured in the August issue of PCT. Manufacturers, if you have a mosquito product you’d like to see in PCT, send a press release and photo to jdorsch@giemedia.com.
Curtis Dyna-Fog
The new Mini-Lite is one of the lightest and most convenient ULV applicators. It offers convenience and efficiency with comfort and ease of operation, Curtis Dyna-Fog reports. Built to aircraft tolerances to achieve lightweight and superior performance in all applications, the Mini-Lite is designed as a dual-purpose machine for indoor and outdoor use. The Mini-Lite can be quickly mounted on a small utility vehicle such as a golf cart or ATV for mosquito or fly control. With the optional remote spray nozzle kit, pest management professionals can spray in areas such as warehouses, campgrounds, back yards, ballparks and swimming pools. Due to its low initial cost, the Mini-Lite is the professional’s best machine for adulticiding, barrier spraying and spot treatments, the company says.
Cleary Chemical
The Cleary Chemical Ecologix Division announces the launch of Sentry Mosquito Biolarvicide Granule. Sentry contains the active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a natural soil bacterium that targets the mosquito larvae and prevents the development of breeding and biting adults. Sentry Biolarvicide Granule is packaged in 10-pound bags as well as an 8-ounce Tip ‘N Measure bottle. Sentry has a broad label and can be used in areas as small as birdbaths or areas as large as lakes.
Monster Mosquito
Monster Mosquito System’s latest deliverable is the water pressure-powered Injector Model. The company says that pest management professionals who have used its marketing and technical methodology have succeeded in the mosquito misting business nationwide and continue to reap the benefit of quarterly service calls. The Injector Model is patented and warranted.
The company’s Solar Model mosquito misting system is not limited by a power supply and gives the homeowner all the benefits of the existing reservoir technology. Expandable to 60 nozzles and powered by a 120-psi pump, there are few limits to where a system can be placed or to the performance produced. The company says pest management professionals benefit from quarterly refills and the initial retail sale.
Mosquito Boss
Mosquito Boss is an automatic mosquito control system that utilizes pyrethrum. The chemical is water based, biodegradable and never leaves a residue, the company says. The mosquito control system works by pumping and atomizing the chemical with pressure and low-volume nozzles. An ultra-low volume spraying system was developed for greater performance. The operation stops the life cycle of insects. When pest management professionals stop the life cycle of the female mosquito — which lays eggs every six to 10 days — by spraying, the population of the insect is reduced.
Rush Hampton
Rush Hampton has introduced the new Mosquito Catcher, an environmentally friendly mosquito control device, the company reports. The Mosquito Catcher attracts, captures and destroys mosquitoes, reducing the mosquito population from the outdoor environment. The Mosquito Catcher can be used around children and pets and does not use propane, pesticides, flame or high voltage. The unit works by attracting mosquitoes to its heat and light sources. Mosquitoes are drawn in to a high-velocity fan that pulls them into the unit. The mosquitoes are dehydrated and reduced to tiny particles where they are collected in a drawer at the bottom of the unit. The Mosquito Catcher is cleaned by emptying the drawer once a month. The catcher has been designed for use on porches, balconies and backyards. Constructed with a powder coating to withstand rusting, the unit uses the same amount of electricity as a 40-watt light bulb.
TIFA
TIFA manufactures different types of multi-purpose power fogging machines such as TIFA model 100E, 1504 and TAPA/TINA, which has the capability of producing several spraying techniques such as thermal fogging, cold fogging, aerosol, ultra-low volume spray, larvaciding and residual application in addition to conventional spraying techniques. TIFA engineers provide — on a periodic basis — extensive training programs, techniques and seminars to the end users of TIFA equipment. Complete field back-up services are carried out on a no-charge basis for the lifetime of the TIFA equipment, which can last 25 years or more, the company says.
Wildlife Management Supplies

Wildlife Management Supplies has introduced the Infrared Mosquito Killing Trap. The device is a mosquito management technology system developed with the help of NASA’s technical assistance. The IMKT provides its users with constant mosquito coverage. Users are able to use the system for up to 1 acre of land. The trap is listed under the Underwriters Laboratory, and is safe, quiet and odorless. According to its manufacturer, the IMKT has been shown to reduce local mosquito populations by a significant number. The IMKT unit works by using CO2. The machined aluminum structure of the IMKT allows for a sturdy structure, the company reports. There is also no need for attractants or replacement nets.
Zoecon Professional Products
Altosid Pro-G, produced by Zoecon Professional Products, works by killing mosquito larvae. One application is used on the larvae and kills them before they can develop into adults, causing problems for individuals. The single application provides enough mosquito control for up to 30 days. Altosid Pro-G contains methoprene, an insect growth regulator. Methoprene works by stopping mosquitoes from becoming breeding, biting adults; simply put, it stunts their growth. Methoprene is a target-specific chemical that will not affect fish, waterfowl, mammals or predatory insects that can be beneficial to surroundings. For quick knock-down of adult mosquitoes, Zoecon Professional Products offers Mavrik Perimeter. Mavrik Perimeter contains the pyrethroid fluvalinate, a chemical that immediately affects the nervous systems of mosquitoes. Because Mavrik won’t harm ornamental plant species, it can be used anywhere mosquitoes infest outdoors.
